Sawyer Products Mini Water Filtration System

A good set of survival tools must include everything that you could possibly need in an emergency situation. A lot of survival kits have tools for making a shelter, collecting the food and other but not many emergency kits include a good water filtration system, simply because of the fact that you will easily find a source of water in the wilderness. The ultimate survival gear and professional military survival gear always, besides many survival gadgets and tools, have mini water filtration systems – like the one I will talk about in this article, Sawyer Products Mini Water Filtration System.

This filtering system is aimed for professional, but also for recreational use – it can be found in a basic camping survival kit but also in the best survival kit that you can find to buy. In case you are wondering what to put in a survival kit first, maybe you should start with this one. This filter has weight of only 2 ounces, with a hollow fiber membrane filter of 0.1 micron. This second generation filter from a company named Sawyer removes 99% of bacteria, including one of the most powerful bacteria salmonella. The advantage of this filter is its multifunctional design – you can attach it to a drinking pouch, you can use a straw to drink directly from a river, connect the filter to hydration pack or even screw it onto other bottles. From my experience, to prolong the life of this versatile filter, it would be good to clean and sanitize it after each use – and to determine whether it really needs a cleaning, you can see by the slowed water flow. The product is sold in several versions – but the basic version provides you with water filter with tip cap, 16-ounce squeeze-pouch that can be reused, 7 inches long straw and syringe as a cleaning plunger.

One advice I can give you is to be careful with the bag – do not force too much water through filter or you will tear the bag. Also, you don’t need to make too much pressure to the bag in order to provide a good stream of water but rather a normal amount of squeezing to get the normal water stream. Also, include a plastic bottle in your emergency kit so you can attach the filter to it and have another container full of water that can be used with this outstanding water filter.
